The GUT – SKIN connection

Our skin and our gut are intricately linked, therefore I always recommend an inside and out approach to skincare.

When it comes to what we eat, this definitely affects how are skin looks. Whether it is inflammation, redness, texture, brightness,

My top 5 categories for skin boosting to make it the best that it can be are…

1.      Vitamin C

You will most likely know the link between immune system function and vitamin C, but vitamin C is a vitamin and an antioxidant, therefore it does a huge number of things in the body.

When it comes to our skin, vitamin C is involved in creating new and repairing damaged collagen. It actually changes the forms of 2 amino acids, proline and lysine, into the collagen forms.

Collagen are those protein fibres that gives our skin structure and give us that plump, full and healthy look. It is basically the scaffolding that keeps our skin up.

Thankfully the Tropic Skin Feast moisturiser is packed full of vitamin C to add onto the skin for the outside element of the inside and out approach.

Foods that will help you boost your vitamin C intake:

Kiwis, strawberries, oranges, pineapple and peppers.

2.      Catechins

These are antioxidants that help prevent the breakdown of the protein fibres in collagen. The most famous catechins containing compound is green tea. Other options are apples, rhubarb and apricots. Good news is that dark chocolate and red wine also contain catechins!

3.      Anthocyanins

Anthocyanins help collagen fibres link up, creating that beautiful scaffolding structure for plump and hydrated skin.

These are found in dark blue and red fruits and vegetables including raspberries, blueberries, plums, blackcurrants, red cabbage and aubergines.

You can also find them in Tropic’s Deep Hydration face mask! Perfect for boosting that collagen!!

4.      Anti-inflammatories

The anti-inflammatory, curcumin, in turmeric has had a lot of air time recently as it is a potent anti-inflammatory. The Face Lift mask by Tropic is an excellent option for helping to reduce redness and angry skin, as well as having a turmeric latte, or adding turmeric to curries.

Ginger (in Tropic’s Clear Skin mask) is also a potent anti-inflammatory. It also is fabulous in ginger and lemon tea, or fresh ginger in stir fries.

5.      Probiotics and Prebiotics.

These two come together, as the probiotics (the good bacteria) needs to be fed with the prebiotics (the fibre) and reinforces the gut and skin connection. When our gut bacteria is out of balance, it can travel to our skin and set up camp. It can cause redness, acne, swelling and infections. When we look after our good bacteria, our good bacteria looks after our skin.

You can take a probiotic supplement which may contain the Lactobacillus bacteria strains that are also in all three of the Tropic face masks. The Deep Hydration mask even contains chicory inulin, which is a type of fibre to help feed the good bacteria on our skin! Win win!!

So for healthy skin, and a significant collagen boost, stick to these 5 and get your glow inside and out!
